Alanis Morissette Falls Ill On Promo Tour

SYDNEY (CP) -- Canadian singer Alanis Morissette has cut short her visit to Australia and also ditched a heavily promoted public appearance at a television station on Tuesday.

Morissette began a promotional tour in Australia on Monday after a visit to Japan, where she apparently caught an undisclosed virus.

She was scheduled to perform three acoustic songs in her only public appearance of the tour at the studios of pay television music station Channel V in the Fox Studios complex in Sydney on Tuesday night.

But it is believed she canned those plans, and a visit to Melbourne and New Zealand, for health reasons.

Channel V presenter Andrew Mercardo, who has previously interviewed the 27-year-old star, said he was disappointed.

"She was meant to make a public appearance today but cancelled," Mercardo said. "I'm hugely disappointed she wasn't able to perform at Fox Studios today.

"I interviewed her in Los Angeles last December, and she is one of the nicest and down-to-earth people I've ever interviewed."

Australian Associated Press quoted sources at Morissette's record company, Warner Music, as saying the tour was cut short after the singer caught a virus during her Japanese visit.

Morissette left Sydney on a flight to Los Angeles Tuesday.

The singer has sold more than one million albums in Australia and was here to promote her latest release, Under Rug Swept, which debuted at No. 1 in the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) charts when released last month. It is now in sixth spot.

She performed Monday night at swanky venue, M, in East Sydney at an invitation-only industry event and had also been scheduled for a special performance in the boardroom of Sydney radio station Triple-M on Tuesday.
